business 源自中古英语 bisynes（忙碌、事务），与 “busy（忙的）” 同源；trip 源自中古英语 trippen（轻快地走、绊一下），后来引申为“一次旅行”。两者组合 business trip 字面即“因事务而进行的一次出行”，现代英语中固定指“因工作而旅行/出差”。
