在Firefox插件体系中经常出现的"chrome"这个词有什么典故么？

开发Firefox插件时，经常会用到”chrome“这个词。比如清单文件叫chrome.manifest，chrome还可以作为特殊协议名，比如指代插件文件路径：chrome://browser/content/browser.xul。

我想这个跟Chrome浏览器肯定没什么关系吧，Firefox有插件时Chrome还没出生呢。而Chrome的英文释义又只有"铬"，莫非这个词在浏览器领域还有别的典故？
